St Valentine, Sacrifice & Self Love

Saint Valentine was a 3rd-century Roman priest who defied Emperor Claudius II by secretly marrying couples. Claudius II believed single men made better soldiers and outlawed marriage; Valentine thought this unjust and continued to perform weddings.

The story of Saint Valentine is often told as one of quiet self-sacrifice: choosing love, commitment, and compassion even when it came at great personal cost. But his legacy isn’t just about giving everything away, it’s about acting from deep integrity rather than fear. True love, then and now, asks us to care for others without abandoning ourselves. When love is rooted in self-respect, it becomes sustainable: we can offer kindness, loyalty, and courage freely, while also honoring our own worth, limits, and well-being. Love of self and love of others aren’t opposites—they strengthen each other.
